Watch out - big brother is searching!

Recent research suggests that many employers are snooping around online with the aim of screening potential employee candidates. A recent study found that a significant amount of employers use the search space to find out more information about the potential employee. As a result it is estimated that some candidates have been eliminated based on information found online.

Consequently, those that enjoy the various blogging communities have been forced to think more carefully before they publish personal comments online. Take, for example, the growth of MySpace. By doing an email address or previous education search it is very easy for people to be tracked down. Therefore what happens on MySpace doesn't necessarily always stay on MySpace. Those that comfortably post comments and opinions online - and sometimes quite controversial posts too - should think carefully. Ask yourself: is there anyone I don't want to see this?

Furthermore, photographic evidence could potentially add insult to injury. Would you want to employ someone that appears highly professional, yet is in fact an out of office party animal who posts photos of themselves intoxicated and half naked online? Lets face it, some things are best kept private.

Social networking sites full of user generated content are becoming more and more popular by the day. People can be tracked from the other side of the globe by those simply punching in a few details. MySpace has a reputation for bringing people together, making the world appear to be a smaller place. In reality, the online world is a small place. For some this has been advantageous. Talented music artists have been tracked down by record companies. The Arctic Monkeys, for example, who have taken off recently in the UK, are a fine example of such positive consequences.

There are plus sides to the new accessibility people have to the comings and goings of those involved in social networking, however, for those of you that are looking to find a new job, or who will be looking for a new job in the future - beware! You never know who is searching!
