MySpace launches Spanish version

MySpace launches Spanish version MySpace is planning to test a Spanish-language version of its popular social site network, according to a report in Australia's Daily Telegraph.

The move follows previous MySpace expansions into the German, Dutch, Japanese and French languages.

There are estimated to be well over 350 million Spanish speakers in the world and it is hoped that es.myspace.com will be able to tap this vast market.

Travis Katz, general manager of MySpace International, told the newspaper that MySpace needs to diversify in order to attain global accessibility.

Mr Katz said that Argentina, Chile, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela would be MySpace's initial targets, but "as those markets grow, we're likely to launch more country-specific sites in Latin America".

"We're moving rapidly to build communities that reflect and respect the lifestyles of our diverse members," Mr Katz said.

One impetus behind MySpace's expansion may be the existence of other Latino-focused sites like Vostu - a kind of Hispanic version of Facebook - and Portuguese networking site Orkut.

Some estimate that the United States may also, in a few years, become an entirely bilingual nation.

If this were to happen, then a site like ElHood, which is in both English and Spanish, may be more attractive to users than one with which users must choose a single language.
