About.com - Search Engine and Contents Portal

In 1997 the Mining Company was launched in New York City as the first information network to use hundred of guides, screened by the company, to build a database based on each of their specific topics.

The network is organised into 23 channels, covering 50,000 subjects with over 1 million links to resources on the Net. In 1997 it was renamed About.

UPDATE

In March 2001 About was acquired by the media giant Primedia, owner of US based Channel One. Statistics show that About was considered the fastest growing search property in the US in 2002, most popular with women and teens.

About guides are based all around the world and come from all walks of life. They specialise in a particular field of interest, supplying opinions, reviews, discussions and guidance for the benefit of About users.

In February 2002, About, Inc. and Recruit launched 'All About Japan' providing a decidedly uncommon human touch that is rapidly gaining popularity with Japanese users and marketers.

In less than six months of development, All About Japan had created a service with more than 150 human guides covering hundreds of diverse topics ranging from Formula One Racing to Stock Trading. Initial advertisers include leading offline Japanese companies such as Mitsui Fudosan, the largest real estate company, and The Nomura Securities, the largest securities company.
