17 February 2012Apple unleashes a Mountain Lion

In a convergence of two platforms, Apple has released the developer preview of its new OS X dubbed Mountain Lion.
This is the ninth major operating system release for the tech giant, and this time around Mountain Lion seeks to bring more of the popular iOS features found on the iPad to the Mac computer.
According to Apple's
official press release, the OS X will have over 100 new features "inspired by the iPad": "Mountain Lion introduces Messages, Notes, Reminders and Game Centre to the Mac, as well as Notification Centre, Share Sheets, Twitter integration and AirPlay Mirroring."
The new operating system will also rely more on iCloud than previous versions. Apple added that, "Mountain Lion is the first OS X release built with iCloud in mind for easy setup and integration with apps."
On the security side of things, Mountain Lion also introduces a new feature called Gatekeeper; allowing users to define what apps can and cannot be run on their computers based on who built them and where they were bought from.
Apple said about the feature: "You can choose to install apps from any source, just as you do on a Mac today, or you can use the safer default setting to install apps from the Mac App Store, along with apps from developers that have a unique Developer ID from Apple. For maximum security, you can set Gatekeeper to only allow apps from the Mac App Store to be downloaded and installed."
Mountain Lion has only been released to those with Apple Developer accounts, letting programmers get started on integrating their apps before its release. Apple hasn't given a definite public release date or pricing info as yet, but it is expected to be available to the masses this summer.
