The iPhone has already created a stir, managing to keep most punters satisfied with the latest in mobile phone gadgets, until now. There has been speculation for nearly a year now but Google's own mobile device brand - known simply as the gPhone - is currently back on the table as a possible venture, with recent reports even suggesting a 2008 launch. The rumours of a Google branded handset ran rife last year when Google quietly announced they were working on mobile projects, but such reports were quickly dismissed, with Google stating that it had no further intentions to create a new phone gadget at that time. Instead the news of Google's involvement with the Open handset Alliance was revealed and talk of the gPhone decreased - until now.
Rumours have appeared suggesting that the design is being created by San Francisco based product development organisation Ammunition Design Group, who have a reputation for designing mobile phones, computers and hardware for large organisations such as Dell, Hewlett-Packard and Palm, according to popular tech blog site TechCrunch
Google couldn't be considering the launch of their gPhone at a better time, if that is indeed what they are doing, with recent reports showing the sharp increase of mobile web browsing. According to data from comScore, Inc. who are measurers of the digital world, the iPhone is particularly having an impact amongst France, Germany and UK users, with a reported 80% using mobile web technology. These statistics display how much mobile web technology has advanced and how they are strongly competing with smartphone users, as consumer demand continues to increase along with how often they browse for news and information on their mobile.
If a gPhone is to be released, Google's Android operating system will be employed with the aim of increasing internet advertising revenue for the Mountain View giants. However, as mobile companies plan possible release dates of Android-powered devices, there are also talks of rival platforms as the competition heats up to generate the most revenue from such web-based services. The Android operating system is an open source operating system; therefore the systems code can be accessed by any developer who wants to make a programme that runs on it. The apparent problem holding back an earlier release for Android is finalising how handset manufacturer's devices will accommodate the new system.
Whether a gPhone is actually on its way is something we'll certainly be inetersted to find out about, but either way times are exciting in the mobile web sphere as Google continue to woo the world with their real, and imagined, innovations.
