Lost in New York? Find your way with GPS-enabled Google Maps

Lost in New York? Find your way with GPS-enabled Google Maps If you're one of those people that have trouble with directions, never fear! The Los Angeles based mobile network operator, Helio Drift, announced on November 9th the launch of a new mobile device with a GPS-enabled version of Google Maps.

Google Maps has been available for some time now, however users eager to find directions previously had to type in their location - which is a difficult task if you're actually lost - as well as their target location to get results.

The new GPS-enabled version of Google Maps shows the current location of the user through a blue dot, saving you valuable time since you will only have to type in your desired location. But the best feature is that this Google Maps version updates the location of the user as it moves - so you will be made well aware if you are actually walking in the wrong direction.

The Drift model includes all the following features:
Helio Drift has also created an additional feature called "Buddy Beacon", which can track the current location of up to twenty five friends on a map and plot routes using satellite technology. Helio Drift's mobile phone has been custom-built by Samsung and it targets a young audience. Presently, this device is only available in the United States at a market price of US$225. Google Maps are free for Helio Drift users.

In case you feel at risk to be found by your ex-partner, or you simply don't feel like socializing, you can just turn off the "Buddy Beacon" feature, which will prevent anyone with a Helio Drift mobile device from knowing your exact whereabouts.

Google Maps for mobiles also provides satellite images of locations and real-time traffic reports in thirty major US cities.

The combination of Google software and Samsung's technology has created a very powerful phone which includes Bluetooth technology, a large screen display of 2.12 inches, a two megapixel camera and a MP3 plus MP3G4 player in white or black.

So if you ever get lost in the USA or want to know exactly where your friends are, the solution is now in your hands. Sadly, those of us who live outside the US will have to wait a while before we can enjoy this luxury. Until then, traditional maps will just have to do the next time you take a wrong turning off Oxford Street.
