Bango launches free mobile web starter service

Bango has announced the launch of a free mobile web service called Bango Starter, removing the costs of selling digital content on the web.

The cost and complexity of selling content direct to mobiles via premium SMS services is on the rise, but Bango suggests the mobile web model is driving charges down.

The free, lightweight starter version offers businesses, brands and individuals the chance to use Bango to experience the benefits of selling digital content on the mobile web.

And the mobile web was highlighted by Bango as the "ideal environment" for selling, suggesting that consumers are increasingly using it to search for the content they want.

Bango chief execuitve Ray Anderson said: "The internet way of working with low cost of entry and global reach provides a refreshing change for the mobile content industry.

"By providing global WAP billing and the mobile search basics for free with our Bango Starter service, we encourage the 'long tail' of smaller businesses to give the mobile web a try."

Bango also suggested that the mobile web is replacing SMS as the best way for mobile users to interact.

The popularity of mobile web services is booming in the UK, as a recent study by Telephia and comScore revealed.

Nearly six million people in Britain used a mobile device to access the internet in January alone.

And many more will be logging on in London in the coming months, after the Cloud network launched a new Wi-Fi service for 350,000 people in the city last month.
