Berners-Lee predicts future eclipse of Google

Berners-Lee predicts future eclipse of Google English developer and creator of the internet Sir Timothy Berners-Lee has predicted that web giant Google may eventually be overtaken as the leading internet brand by a firm that harnesses the potential of next-generation technology.

Mr Berners-Lee, who was responsible for the first successful communication between a client and a server via the internet in 1990, told the Times that current means of searching for pages over the web will be superseded by the technologies involved in the "web of the future".

In times to come, he stated, any pieces of information, including such things as bank statements and photographs, will be able to be linked to each other.

The expert went on to say that, whereas the internet is currently a collection of pages connected by Google and other search engines, in the future it will be connected by a ground-breaking technology referred to as the "semantic web".

The semantic web is a term used to describe the next phase of the internet's development under which web-based connectivity will be built into any piece of data, not just web pages.

Mr Berners-Lee stated: "Using the semantic web, you can build applications that are much more powerful than anything on the regular web."

He added: "Imagine if two completely separate things - your bank statements and your calendar - spoke the same language and could share information with one another. You could drag one on top of the other and a whole bunch of dots would appear showing you when you spent your money."
