Blighty's websites have one year till the cookie crumbles as EU law deferred

Blighty's websites have one year till the cookie crumbles as EU law deferred Blighty's websites have been given one year to comply with new EU cookie regulations, even though a European Privacy and Communications Directive requiring websites to gain the "explicit consent" of web-users before cookie-collecting becomes law today.

According to BBC News, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) decided to defer or slowly rollout the regulation of new European measures, which mandate a website must gain a user's consent before using text files or cookies to collect information on their browsing habits and more.

ICO officials said, even though the cookie collecting consent curb comes into force today, there'll be "no overnight changes," as businesses will have a year to implement cookie collection opt-out pop-ups for users.

The government added that it was looking to make the legislative rollout as "business-friendly" as possible, and believed in "light-touch regulation."

Communications minister Ed Vaizey told the BBC the grace period would allow businesses the time needed to adjust and develop workable solutions to what's being lauded a sea-change in user-privacy.

The delay will also help legislators review current privacy laws, businesses adapt their websites and users become more aware of changes to their browsing rights.

"We recognise that some website users have real concerns around online privacy but also recognise that cookies play a key role in the smooth running of the internet," Vaizey said.

"But it will take some time for workable technical solutions to be developed, evaluated and rolled out, so we have decided that a phased-in approach is right."

Speaking in March, the Information Commissioner Christopher Graham warned businesses that a staggered rollout was in no way a 'get out of jail free card.'

Mr Graham advised business to begin looking into ways to interact with and gain consent from web users.
