Eric Schmidt, Google's chief executive, has announced plans to launch a weblog only search, but has so far refused to be drawn into giving further details.
This follows on from Google's purchase of www.blogger.com earlier this year. Google has been criticised recently for how much prominence it gives to blog entries in its normal search results - partly as a result of the emphasis Googles algorithm gives to hyperlinks.
Whether blog results will continue to appear in ordinary web listings or be filtered out into the proposed weblog only search has yet to be announced.
The move indicates how seriously major players such as Google are regarding such new forms of media as weblogs. For most people, weblogs became mainstream during the recent Gulf conflict, when a number a blogs written from within Iraq, such as http://dear_raed.blogspot.com began being reported on in the national press.
