16 July 2007Chinese firm to sue Google over name clash
Google is facing a law suit in China after a firm in the country flagged up the fact that the
search engine was using a Chinese name too similar to the Chinese company.
Beijing Guge and Science and Technology has taken exception with Google for operating under the name Guge in China as it is damaging the firm's business.
It has been claimed by Beijing Guge and Science and Technology that people have been ringing its office in the hope of contacting
Google, which had been disrupting staff.
Tian Yunshan of Beijing Guge explained to Bloomberg in a telephone interview: "We just want Google to change their commercial name," referring to the scenario that has occurred whereby people searching the telephone
directory for Google find only his firm due to the search engine company not being listed.
"We have already passed our demands on to
Google... we will see what happens in court," Mr Tian added.
The case is to be heard in Beijing's Haidian district in the near future, according to Beijing News.
The translation of 'Gu Ge' is 'harvesting song' explains the Shanghai Daily and the China unit altered its name to this moniker last April in a bid to attract more Chinese web users to use the
search engine.
At present China has 144 million internet users, according to statistics produced by the Chinese government, highlighting the size of the market available to Google.
