Environmental start-up launches eco-networking

Environmental start-up launches eco-networking MakeMeSustainable, a start-up company that focuses on bringing about environmental change through action, has launched its own website to help individuals and businesses to manage energy consumption and reduce their carbon footprint.

As well as offering visitors a tool with which to manage their carbon and energy consumption, the group's site MakeMeSustainable.com also features a social networking platform, Boston Business Journal reports.

The company is set to take advantage of the social networking boom by giving users the opportunity to track and share their environmental experiences in an online community.

MakeMeSustainable chief executive officer and co-founder Benjamin Brown said in a statement: "Makemesustainable is more than a carbon footprint calculator or a social networking site, it's about something much bigger.

"It's about all of us taking our collective knowledge and desire to make a difference and spreading it as far as we can. Our tools make it possible for anyone to translate how we feel about the environment into what we do about the environment."

The company is hoping to convince site visitors that going green is financially viable and users are encouraged to follow a three-step process of carbon calculation, actions-based reduction and long-term community engagement to reduce their footprint.

Social networking channels are currently the largest growing sites on the internet, with MySpace, Facebook and Bebo leading the way in the US and UK market share.
