European online banking rises sharply

Online banking in Europe will increase steadily, with 51 percent of the online population banking online by 2007. An upturn in online brokerage activity will depend on a market turnaround. By 2007, 10 percent of online users will trade stocks or funds online.

The number of online banking users in Europe will increase from 54 million in 2002 to 103 million in 2007. Consumers will slowly gain interest in online activities like online bill payment. Online mortgage adoption will take longer to become popular, as just one percent of online users will initiate a mortgage online by 2007.

Brokerage Forecast
Online brokerage activity in Europe is still suffering from a soft economy and depressed international markets. However, assuming a slight market upturn around 2004, online brokerage users will grow to over 21 million by 2007. The majority will be occasional and light users, trading between 10 and 20 orders per year.
