18 September 2003Even easier to lose customers?
Does Verisign's audacious swoop on dotcom and dotnet typos have an impact on
search engine marketing concerns?
It seems the answer is - most probably. If would-be customers are forced to guess your URL then the chances of them finding a competitor or random site with a similar name to yours are very much greater now.
Internet users entering URLs for non-existent dotcom and dotnet addresses will now find themselves on Verisign's commercial SiteFinder page. SiteFinder suggests alternative addresses the user can try by providing a list of similar URLs for sites that do exist. For example, a slip of the fingers could easily result in
www.bigmothmedia.com appearing in your address bar. It'll be all too easy to try one of those tempting SiteFinder links than correct the typo.
