Facebook users who stay up late at night tossing and turning about old status updates now have a way to put their minds at ease.
Exfoliator - created by programmer Michael Devine - lets users delete posts en masse based on how long they've been up on the popular social networking site.
Devine told CNET: "I'm an impulsive guy. I like making people laugh and I also have strong political views.
"Given that, you can imagine the kinds of thing I post on Facebook. So I wanted to clean up my own profile and thought others might want this as well."
The tool gives users an opportunity to clear content anywhere between three months and three years old - erasing everything from posts on friends' walls, likes, comments, and status updates.
The App - currently only available on Android operating systems but with a launch for iPhone and iPad coming soon - helps users delete any potentially sensitive or off-colour comments that are no longer relevant or appropriate to a user, and comes at a time when Facebook are increasingly finding more ways to make old posts and status updates visible.
In September, Facebook announced Timeline, a tool that brings users face-to-face with everything they've done and forgotten about on the social networking site.
Furthermore, as people increasingly use social networking platforms to express themselves, share political views, post photos and interact with friends, privacy issues have evolved to become one of the most hot-button topics in the social sphere.
Devine said: "When you really think about it, it becomes clear that there's actually no reason to leave anything (on Facebook) after a certain point in time because no one sees it or they rarely see it. It just sits there waiting for someone to see it out of context and then it can cause you trouble."
