22 May 2007Facebook eyeing expansion plans

Social networking site Facebook is set to announce the expansion of its offerings at the Facebook F8 event in San Francisco this week, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The popular online friend network is branching out says the newspaper, with the launch of 'Facebook Platform' anticipated.
This new tool is expected to turn Facebook into an open platform and the Journal suggests it will allow users to "gain access to that content inside Facebook".
Facebook has not yet commented publicly on the details of the new development, but the paper offered a little insight into what can be expected.
"For instance, an online retailer could build a service in Facebook to let people recommend music or books to their friends, based on the relationships they've already established on the site," the article speculated.
"Or a media company could let groups of users share news articles with each other on a page inside Facebook."
The social networking site is homing in on rivals, including MySpace and Bebo, and the recent
introduction of Facebook Marketplace, an online classified ads forum, looks set to further increase
traffic on the site.
Recent research by Hitwise would suggest that Facebook is making all the right moves at present, with a huge increase in traffic revealed since September last year.
The report showed that MySpace was still the dominant force in social networking, accounting for around 79 per cent of the market share.
However, since Facebook became available to all internet users in the autumn, traffic has soared by an incredible 106 per cent.
