Facebook: First Europe, then the world?

Facebook: First Europe, then the world? Facebook's dominance in Europe has finally come to fruition. The social networking site has seen its use in European regions rise to 4.1 per cent of the total time spent online - a rise of 1.1 per cent year on year - according to recently released figures from ComScore.

Such advantageous growth positions Facebook comfortably within pole position across Europe for the coming year.

The remarkable growth of the ubiquitous social networking site in Europe has been largely attributed to its efforts to diversify in local markets, for example, by allowing its users to translate its site into various European languages as part of an initiative launched back in January 2008 (as well as the amusing but entirely confusing pirate language option).

The company's greatest increase in uptake has been witnessed in Spain where users have increased tenfold and propelled it to the number one spot, according to CNET News. However, despite its eagerness to break into the foreign market, and the deluge of friends in European markets, Facebook has not championed in every country.

In Germany, where StudiVZ reigns supreme, Facebook ranks fourth; seventh in Russia and third in Portugal. The UK still constitutes Facebook's most ardent supporter, contributing 22.7 million active users to the company's pooling 200 million worldwide. France comes in closely with 13.7 million users nationwide.

Dominance also continues to evade Facebook at home in the US, where MySpace is the resident top dog. However, provided the company's international growth rates continue on the same trajectory, many expect Facebook to overtake MySpace by the end of the year. Who knows, maybe these figures indicate the potential for Facebook to take over the social networking world?
