23 January 2009Facebook packs a worldwide punch

Social networking behemoths Facebook and Myspace look set to square up over market dominance in the US after Facebook swells to almost twice the size of its rival on the worldwide stage.
Trusted industry news site TechCrunch noted that Facebook received 80 billion page views in December, almost twice that of Myspace's monthly yield, according to ComScore. This dramatic turnaround of fortunes has taken place in little under six months, with TechCrunch noting that in April 2008, Facebook had only just caught up with Myspace.
Facebook presently enjoys a staggering market-leading position in global social networking; everywhere, that is, except in the US. Despite Facebook being able to boast nearly 100 million more worldwide users than Myspace, their rival still holds a considerably greater portion of the US market, with Myspace receiving 72 million monthly unique visits in April 2008, compared to Facebook's 36 million.
US market territory has staunchly been held by networking champions MySpace, but their title seems set to predictably slip, with analysts hypothesising Facebook's take over by 2010.
The lure of the US market is of course down to the potential to generate significant advertising revenue. With Facebook's exponential growth expected to continue, it's only a matter of time before their global success spills over into US market dominance. Ding ding, a new round is clearly about to commence.
