According to a Hitwise announcement, Facebook visits accounted for one in every seven (14.5 per cent) internet page views in the UK during September this year. This represents a year-on-year increase of 86.1 per cent, with visits to the site doubling in the last 14 months.
The only site to receive more visits from UK users in the month was
Google, although Facebook's users visited a greater number of pages in total, putting the social networking site well ahead in terms of page views.
Robin Goad, director of research for Experian Hitwise in the UK, said: "Although it has fallen somewhat off the media radar in favour of Twitter recently, Facebook remains far and away the most popular social networking website in the UK.
"One significant factor is that the site's growth in the UK doesn't yet show any signs of slowing.
"A key measure of success for any social network is average session time; as we have seen with sites such as Friends Reunited and MySpace, when average session times begins to drop off visitor numbers soon follow.
"Facebook has yet to experience this problem: Hitwise monitoring data shows that its average visit time increased from 19 minutes 59 seconds in September 2008 to 26 minutes 14 seconds during September 2009 [a 31% increase]."
Boasting more than 20 million active users, Facebook accounted for practically half of all visits to social networking sites in the UK for September, at 49.2 per cent. It also received more than the combined totals of
Google UK, eBay UK and YouTube. However, Facebook's advertising success did not match up to their visitor counts, with Nielsen figures revealing that Facebook accounted for only 4.8 per cent of UK display ad impressions and just one per cent of UK display ad revenue.
