Last month, we first reported about the upcoming arrival of Firefox 3 and since that time the new browser has gone from having "no set release date" to launching, well, today. On the Download Day website, Mozilla has hit the web with a pretty clever marketing ploy - an attempt to set a Guinness World Record for the most software downloads in a 24-hour period. When we heard about its cunning ploy, we applauded the brilliance of the venture: even if their target of 1.6 million downloads isn't met, they'll be setting a record, not trying to break one - so it's a win in any case. Can you smell that free publicity?
Attempting to gain its main bulk of downloaders through word of mouth, Mozilla has been busy offering banners and buttons for users to post on websites and blogs which means that, should Download Day be a successful venture, it really has something to be proud of. The official site details how users can enjoy the festivities - from planning to collectively download the software together in the office or at school to becoming a Firefox Campus Rep and collecting pledges from fellow students. Mozilla has really gone all out on this one.
So what about Firefox 3 itself? Mozilla claim that the latest version of their popular browser has more than 15,000 improvements and our bigmouth tester was rather impressed by the Beta version. With a host of new features and redesigned old ones, it looks like Firefox 3 is set to enjoy a great launch day - and even if it doesn't turn out to be as foxy as we're led to believe, at least it'll have broken a Guinness World Record.
