First female director set to join Yahoo!

First female director set to join Yahoo! Yahoo! has announced that telecom executive Maggie Wilderotter will join its board of directors.

Ms Wilderotter is currently the chief executive officer of Citizens Communications, a communications provider and local exchange telephone company, where her responsibilities include overall corporate strategy and overseeing all functional areas of the company.

Previously holding a number of high-profile positions, Ms Wilderotter will boost the search engine's board to 11 members.

The appointment will see Yahoo!'s first female director in the company's 12-year history, despite a strong female presence among its higher ranks, with Susan Decker currently serving as company president.

Founder of the company and recently appointed chief executive officer Jerry Yang commented: "With more than 25 years of experience in telephone, wireless, cable television, computers and interactive media, Maggie's broad range of leadership qualifications and proven track record make her an extremely valuable addition to our team."

Her considerable understanding of consumers, technology and business will enable her to bring valuable insight into the company, he added.

Before joining Citizens Communications, Ms Wilderotter had served as chief executive officer of Wink Communications and, following this, as a vice president of the worldwide public sector division at Microsoft.

Aged 52, she has had a distinguished career and has twice been awarded the Vanguard Award for Distinguished Leadership by the National Cable Television Association, as well as other notable accolades.
