Launched last month in the UK, Google 'rich snippets' take structured information from a webpage to offer information such as consumer reviews within the text descriptions accompanying search results.

Product pages that feature reviews will be awarded a star rating out of five, based on the average review score, with accompanying information explaining the number of reviews written and the product's ranking, where such information is available.

Consumers have reportedly found rich snippets to be useful in helping them to make informed decisions, and they are expected to be of great benefit to the ecommerce industry. Webmasters can flag up data that they wish to feature in Google rich snippets, replacing the meta descriptions that have traditionally provided the accompanying text of search results.
