Google's advertising offerings have been expanded to allow website owners who have created content for mobile phones to target users who browse on the go.The AdSense for Mobile service creates adverts depending on the content of mobile websites and allows publishing partners to generate income by placing targeted mobile text adverts, the search engine said in its announcement.
Like the other AdSense products offered by Google, the new offering's text adverts are operated through an auction model, where mobile site content is automatically assessed to ensure adverts are sufficiently relevant to the users being targeted.
Revenue is generated for publishers every time a mobile user chooses to click on the ads. The service will be made available in the US, England, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Ireland, Russia, Netherlands, Australia, India, China and Japan.
"Everything we have done in the PC area can be extended to mobile phones. The needs are similar," Dilip Venkatachari, product management director of Google AdSense for Mobile, told Reuters.
"The mobile advertising market is certainly in the early stages. We are making it [financially viable] for new sources of mobile content to emerge," he added.
In its latest financial results for the second quarter of 2007, Google announced that partner site revenues through AdSense totalled $1.35 billion, representing 35 per cent of its total income, which amounted to $3.87 billion.
Aggregate paid clicks through AdSense rose 47 per cent year-on-year, the search engine also revealed.
