Search engine Google has introduced a new feature to its successful Google Maps service. My Maps will enable users to create individual and personalised maps that can then by shared with other people.
Visitors will be able to use interactive points to trace routes on maps - maybe to highlight a favourite spot or show a friend their running route. However, each map will have the option of being made public or remaining private. The public maps will be available to access via Google's popular local search index within two to six weeks.
There will also be the option to view the maps in Google Earth as well as add photos, text or even a link to YouTube videos.
Carl Sjogreen, senior product manager with Google Australia, explained: "There's a bunch of really beautiful things all around the earth that, unless you're spending tons and tons of time browsing around Google Maps, aren't going to be easy to find."
He added: "But with a tool like this, somebody that goes and finds interesting formations around the planet can create this rich map with photographs and descriptions."
The new My Maps feature is available through Google Maps sites across the world, including the US, UK, Canada, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Netherlands, Japan and Australia.
