Google polled as Britain's biggest brand

Google polled as Britain's biggest brand Having recently been announced as Britain's top "superbrand" from a list of 500 brands, it would seem that Google's reputation is continuing to make advancements. This accolade saw Google beating a host of top brands for the spot, including last year's number 1 brand Microsoft, as well as the BBC, British Airways, and Mercedes-Benz.

The survey results were published by research company YouGov, and showed the search engine beating 499 brands available in the UK. They came third in the same consumer poll last year.

If 2008 was to be the year for anything in the technology world, it would be the prevelance of Google and its services on the news front. From the launch of their new Google Lively virtual world, the controversial Street View software, additions to Google Earth, and acquisition of video sharing site YouTube it seems that Google are hardly ever out of our sight.

This award also further confirms Google's position as the number 1 search engine and will surely come as a blow to MSN and in particularly Yahoo!, who came in at number 75 in the YouGov poll. Hitwise figures showed that Google.co.uk had a 73 per cent share of searchers in May 2008.

The poll saw Microsoft fall to second place whilst Apple, who have also hit the technology news front this year following the launch of its new iPod family and the now infamous iPhone, apparently failed to reach the top 10 by a narrow margin.

If Google's success continues the way it is, the crown looks likely to remain with the company that many people refer to as the king of search engines.
