Google releases Android update

Google releases Android update Internet giant Google has released an update to the software development kit (SDK) for its Android operating system for mobile phones.

Representing the first update since the SDK was released last year, the changes were listed by developer advocate Jason Chen on the company's Android Developers' Blog.

He stated: "We're continuing the early look at the Android SDK that we started back in November by providing updates to the Android APIs and the developer tools based, in part, on the great feedback and suggestions developers have been giving us."

Mr Chen added that Google is "excited" about the progress it has made concerning the platform and "look[s] forward to making additional updates in the future as [Android] evolves towards production-readiness".

Among the alterations made by Google is the addition of a new user interface, which is still "in progress".

Developers will now also be able to support more file formats in the Android media player.

In addition, applications are able to translate a coordinate into an address and vice versa in location-based programs.

During last week's Mobile World Congress, both Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics revealed they are to bring out mobile phones based on Google's Android software platform.

Commenting on the plans, a representative from Samsung stated: "We have been talking with Sprint Nextel, the number three US mobile wireless operator, for the development of the 'Google Phone', with the launching slated for later this year," the Korea Times reported.
