Google has announced the launch of a new service which provides a hosting solution for web developers to build their applications on top of.Entitled Google App Engine, the service has initially been rolled out for 100,000 users and is designed for developers who want to run their whole application stack on Google resources.
According to the search engine provider, the application-hosting tool is designed to make it easier for developers to construct and scale applications, rather than focus on system administration and maintenance.
Using Google App Engine will mean developers can write code once and deploy their applications. Google stated: "Provisioning and configuring multiple machines for web serving and data storage can be expensive and time consuming.
"Google App Engine makes it easier to deploy web applications by dynamically providing computing resources as they are needed. Developers write the code and Google App Engine takes care of the rest," TechCrunch reports.
Additionally, the service enables apps to absorb spikes in traffic, something Google says can be "overwhelming for applications of all sizes".
According to TechCrunch's Michael Accrington, one current limitation of the service is a requirement that applications be written in Python - one of the modern scripting languages used for constructing web apps.
However, Google does say that this is just the first language to be added and that the infrastructure is ultimately designed to be language neutral.
