Search engine Google has announced that its video-sharing site YouTube is set to help non-profit organisations.YouTube unveiled its Non-Profit Programme at the Clinton Global Initiative, a non-partisan project aimed at creating a more integrated global community of shared values and responsibilities.
The programme is intended to enable non-profit organisations to connect more easily with the world's online video community.
It will provide such organisations with the opportunity to create dedicated YouTube channels for themselves, making it easier for web users to find and watch their videos.
Product manager at Google Checkout Maryrose Dunton commented: "In the past few years, online video has emerged as a key tool for grassroots organising on the internet. A short, simple video can demonstrate the impact and the needs of an organisation in a uniquely compelling fashion."
There are 13 initial participants of the initiative, including the American Cancer Society, YouthNoise and Friends of the Earth.
Ms Dunton also stated that the YouTube Non-Profit Programme will enable non-profit organisations to collect donations directly through the channels using a new Google Checkout for Non-Profits.
This service, which can be integrated directly into a non-profit organisation's site, is designed to encourage more donations by making it possible for people to contribute more securely and quickly.
Google acquired YouTube in October last year in a stock-for-stock transaction worth $1.65 billion.
