Google bags lion's share of April searches

Google bags lion's share of April searches After recently topping a poll to be named the UK's favourite brand, Google is celebrating securing the lion's share of US web searches for the month of April.

Recent research by Hitwise revealed that Google accounted for over 65 per cent of searches last month.

Yahoo! was second in the standings, with 20.73 per cent of searches, followed by MSN search on 8.46 per cent and Ask.com with 3.69 per cent.

But Google was streets ahead, securing 65.26 per cent of the market, while also demonstrating the largest year-on-year increase in search market share.

Searches on the site jumped by seven per cent for April 2007 compared to last year, with Yahoo! searches falling by two per cent, MSN experiencing a four per cent drop, while Ask.com searches dipped by around half a per cent.

It is not surprising considering the significant role search engines play these days in helping internet users navigate their way around the web.

Comparing April 2006 and 2007 figures, key industry categories of travel, entertainment and business and finance showed major increases in their share of traffic coming directly from search engines.

Back in March, Bill Tancer, general manager of global research at Hitwise, clearly indicated a trend in the site's popularity.

"Google's growth shows no signs of slowing," he revealed. "Despite capturing the majority of searches in the US, and in light of competitors' improvements, Google's market share of executed searches continues to grow, exceeding ten per cent growth year-over-year."
