Search engine giant Google, along with One Laptop per Child (OLPC) and Unicef, has launched a new project to preserve cultural identities around the world. The portal, named Our Stories, acts as a platform for people across the globe to share their experiences over the internet in the language of their choice.
Additionally, youngsters will be able to use laptops, mobile phones and other devices to record the stories of their friends and family members.
For the project, OLPC will create a digital archive of personal stories by providing children in developing countries with the necessary technology.
According to Ann Veneman, executive director of Unicef, IT can help young people across the world learn more about each other, promote dialogue across borders and cultures and give young people a voice on a range of issues, TechTree reports.
Initially, the Our Stories site will include stories recorded for Unicef by young people in Ghana, Pakistan, Uganda and Tanzania.
Each month, however, stories from more countries will be added to the site.
Commenting on Official Google Blog, Stephen Cho stated: "[The organisations involved] realised that collectively, we had a unique and very real opportunity to leverage our respective strengths to take this idea global and to build together an ability to preserve and share online millions of personal stories from around the world."
There are already around 75 audio recordings available on the site and more are set to be added in the future.
