Google launches barcodes in Favourite Places

Google launches barcodes in Favourite Places Google is planning to send out 100,000 barcode stickers to businesses across the United States in the coming weeks, allowing users to gain instant access to detailed information about Google's 'Favourite Places.'

The New York Times reports that the businesses earmarked for inclusion are based on user interaction with local business search results in Google Maps. These businesses will be able to display stickers in their premises which feature a Google Maps image alongside a QR code, which users can access through code viewing applications on mobile devices.

These QR codes have previously been introduced in Asian countries, allowing customers to receive detailed information on products in stores, including calorie values and recipe ideas, but their introduction to the United States has been complicated due to privacy concerns. This requires users to first start the correct code viewing application on their phone and allow it to access their camera, then to grant permission for the website relevant to the QR code to be opened.

Despite these legal hurdles, which can take around 45 seconds to complete, the experience can be worth the effort. Nick Bilton of the New York Times explains: "In most instances, when the experience works, it can be incredibly rewarding. In Google's case, if you pass the myriad of legal warnings, you will be taken to an associated mobile Web page with rich information about a specific venue, including user reviews, a star rating, maps, contact information and a link to the Web site of the business."

Some of the businesses recognised as Favourite Places by Google include the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Meltdown Comics in Los Angeles and Cheeseburger Baby in Miami.
