Google is running a programming contest worth up to $10,000 and a possible career as the prize.
The contest is known as
Google Code Jam 2003 and is a timed, web-based test of programming skills.
An initial 2 rounds will whittle down the applicants to just 25 individuals who will be invited to Google's headquarters in California to compete for a total of $25,000 in cash prizes.
As part of the plan, Google plans to evaluate the crop of engineers as job candidates.
The contest's page reads: "Think of it as a job interview with a large potential cash bonus just for showing up,"
Google is currently running an aggressive search for new employees to fill its new HQ in one of Silicon Valley's largest office parks, the Amphitheatre Technology Center. It employs more than 1,000 people and has nearly 100 job openings posted on its Web site.
Code Jam begins on Oct 1st and ends Nov 14th, after players compete in three tournament rounds.
