Google has increased the storage and security it offers for its Google Apps suite, which includes a range of tools such as spreadsheets and word processing. In a deal with Postini, the communications security and compliance company bought by Google earlier this year, anti-spam capabilities have been added, along with the ability to recover deleted emails for up to 90 days.
Organisations that pay $50 a month per office worker for the Google Apps package will get an additional 25 gigabytes of data storage per person for free under the new offerings, Reuters reports.
The news agency adds that this improved service offers 50 to 100 times more than rival systems such as IBM Lotus Notes and Microsoft Outlook.
Google can achieve this, it adds, because it delivers email as an internet service, allowing it to deliver storage at a lower cost than traditional email installations.
Matthew Glotzbach, project manager for Google Enterprise, stated: "This highlights the benefits of the software as a service model.
"It is virtually unlimited [e-mail] storage for business users. This is hard to replicate with the Microsoft Exchange model of locally installed software."
Postini services, which include message security, policy enforcement, encryption and archiving, are designed to protect customers from spam, phishing, fraud, viruses and other attacks.
They also encrypt messages to ensure confidentiality and privacy, as well as to archive communications.
Google bought Postini in July, paying $625 million in cash.
