Google on smart phone search and shopping habits

Google on smart phone search and shopping habits With Google's Android platform firmly atop the smart phone summit, Mountain View's perfectly placed to talk mobile. And this week, Google's done just that by releasing statistics on smart phone users' searching and shopping habits.

According to Web Pro News, Google released a series of infographics detailing how smart phones are being used in the States.

Google's infographics have revealed that 89 per cent of US smart phone users use their device each day to search the web, mostly for news (57 per cent), dining information (51 per cent), navigational advice (51 per cent), entertainment (49 per cent) and shopping (47 per cent).

Google also revealed that 59 per cent of mobile searchers go on to discuss the results of a smart phone search by talking to others (40 per cent), visiting social networking sites (39 per cent) and by recommending a brand or product to others (24 per cent).

And, according to Google, a further 67 per cent of smart phone searches continue to research following an initial mobile search, while 68 per cent will visit a business and 53 per cent will make a purchase on or offline.

Google's research also showed a whopping 93 per cent of smart phone users use their mobile device at home, while others use theirs on the go (87 per cent), in a store (77 per cent), in a restaurant (73 per cent), at work (72 per cent) and at a social gathering (66 per cent).

However, few smart phone users give their mobile their undivided attention as 72 per cent of smartphones are used while their owners consume other media including music (44 per cent), TV (33 per cent), internet (29 per cent), video games (27 per cent), print publications (22 per cent) and books (16 per cent).

Despite having multiple focuses of attention, Google believes 82 per cent of smart phone users notice ads on their mobile, and half are prompted to action following exposure to mobile ads.

Selina Rennie of Google's agency team told Web Pro News that smart phones are now so overwhelmingly popular that US smartphone users wouldn't even swap mobile internet access for beer:

"Nearly 9 out [of] 10 smart phone owners use their devices throughout the day for a variety of activities, ranging from using search engines to find information to watching videos," Rennie said.

"They've become so entrenched in our lives that 43 per cent of smart phone owners say that they would prefer to give up beer instead of internet access on their smart phone.
