Google plans International Cleanup Weekend

Google plans International Cleanup Weekend Google is planning an International Cleanup Weekend on October 13th and 14th.

The search engine has posted blogs encouraging people around the world to get involved in cleaning up beaches, trails, local parks and other places "close to home".

So far, the operation, which is being organised using Google Maps, has attracted over 100 plans from across the globe, with a further 900 of the organisers' personal contacts having been invited to help.

According to a Google message, "it takes just a few minutes to plan your own cleanup, make a map of it and send your map to us. [Google will then] add it to a growing map of all the cleanups around the world".

After the cleanups have taken place, those involved are being urged to share their efforts by posting photographs and videos to their maps.

The search engine stated: "Each of these projects will make a small difference to a specific neighbourhood.

"Together, we hope to have a global impact and make a real difference in how lots of people view themselves and their communities."

People intending to take part in the event are encouraged to keep their cleanup groups small - between six and ten people - and work close to home in order to make organising the operations easier.

Google Maps recently hit the headlines following concerns that its Street View service may violate privacy laws in certain parts of the world.

In response, however, the search engine issued a statement declaring that the service would respect such laws in the countries in which it is available.
