Google puts $39 million into wind farms

Google puts $39 million into wind farms Green Energy has always been a keen interest of Google and despite Yahoo!'s accusations that Google is only invested in search, it seems the search engine is keen to make its mark in the energy business as well.

On Monday, Google announced that it had invested just short of thirty-nine million dollars in two wind farms, both of which are located in North Dakota. The wind farms are built by NextERA Energy resources, a subsidiary of the $16 billion - £10.5 billion - Florida-based FPL Group.

According to Mr Yood, a spokesperson for Google and the project, the renewable energy will not be used to power the Google datacenters. The primary goal of the project is to create a return on investment, however should this be successful; it's possible that Google would expand this across its own company infrastructure as well.

Google's interest in the environment and cleaner energy has been an ongoing focus for several years. Given the amount of power Google uses, the company has been looking for ways to reduce its impact on the environment for several years, from installing solar energy systems on campus to promoting hybrids and investing in clean energy companies like eSolar and AltaRock.

According to Rick Needham, Green Business Operations Manager at Google, "We're aiming to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy — in a way that makes good business sense, too". And while these are all big steps for Google, the search engine is still a long way from its promise to help finance the renewable energy generation.
