12 April 2007Google secures 64 per cent of US searches

Almost two thirds of all web searches in the USA are carried out through
Google, according to statistics released today.
Hitwise, which conducted the research this March, has calculated that
Yahoo! was the second most popular
search engine with a 21 per cent market share.
Google's dominance seems to be increasing at the expense of rivals such as
Yahoo!, Ask and MSN.
Bill Tancer, general manager of global research at Hitwise, said it is clear that "Google's growth shows no signs of slowing".
Mr Tancer suggested that Google's grip on the market should have fallen "in light of competitor's improvements" to their services.
Instead, he claimed, "Google's market share of executed searches continues to grow, exceeding ten per cent growth year-over-year".
Hitwise's findings are broadly reflective of findings by other organizations such as comScore.
A report by comScore in February showed
Google with 48 per cent of search business, and Yahoo! on 28 per cent.
comScores's statistics, like those of Hitwise, showed MSN, Ask and Time Warner lagging far behind.
Such is Google's dominance of the search engine market, that "googling" was added to the Merriam-Webster dictionary last year - although Google itself has made some
recent attempts to discourage such use of its brand name.
