Google has unveiled its Google TV service that will allow users to switch between TV and the internet with ease, a move Intel CEO Paul Otellini has called "the biggest improvement to television since colour."
As reported earlier this year, Google TV is a joint venture with Intel, Sony and Logitech, each company being a leader in its field to ensure the new service avoids stumbles.
The Mail reports that previous attempts at merging the internet and TV have had limited success, such as the TV platform of
Yahoo! Connected which only allows TV viewers to access certain websites, but Google TV is expected to fare better due to its easy-to-use companion box and wireless control features.
"Video should be consumed on the biggest, best and brightest screen in the house. And that's a TV. It's not a PC or a phone or anything else in between," said Rishi Chandra, Google project senior product manager, explaining the importance of bringing TV and the web together.
"Our goal is to make the same impact on television as the smart phone has had on the mobile phone market."

With ever more people
heading online when watching TV, Google TV provides a convenient, all-in-one solution that can easily be plugged in to existing HD TV sets just like a digital service or games console.
In addition to the set-top box, Google TV packages will include a wireless remote control, mouse and keyboard to make surfing the internet easier. The service is anticipated to go on sale in the US in the autumn before heading to Britain early next year, however release dates and prices have yet to be announced.
