Google unveils updated Maps service for palm OS devices

Google unveils updated Maps service for palm OS devices Search engine giant Google has unveiled an updated version of its Google Maps Mobile application for palm OS-based devices.

Google hasn't published version numbers on its mobile map page, but the palm OS PRC file does suggest that a version is available.

The web favourite reveals on the palm Treo handset page that the version is quicker and that real-time reports and detailed directions are part of its offerings.

As well as these new features, Google insists the start-up time has been shortened and stylus integration has been enhanced.

"A quick run through the updated version of the app does indeed validate Google's performance improvement claims," reveals palminfocenter.com.

"Additionally, several new icons have been added to the top of the screen permitting quick access to location and business search as well as direction request and the traffic info toggle button."

Meanwhile, recent reports have revealed that Google's planned acquisition of online advertising firm DoubleClick is to be reviewed by European Union regulators.

Consumer groups in the US and EU voiced concerns over the threat the deal might pose to web users' privacy, with the US Federal Trade Commission investigating the potential antitrust ramifications of the agreement.

Julia Holtz, a London-based competition lawyer for Google, told Bloomberg: "Given the pan-European nature of both Google and DoubleClick's businesses we felt that the commission was best placed to review the acquisition."
