Hasbro, makers of the board game Monopoly, are releasing Monopoly City Streets, a live worldwide game of Monopoly using Google Maps as the game board. The game - which launches on Wednesday - will allow users to play one of the world's most popular and competitive games on any street in the world.
New players will be given three million Monopoly dollars to invest in their own empire, a dramatic step up from the measly £200 the traditional board game offers. With Monopoly City Streets, the early bird is likely to catch the worm as those first to get involved in the game have the good fortune to buy up streets straight away.
Although many of the larger cities have been quickly bought up - according to the Guardian - virtual landlords can still find bargains in satellite towns where a good rental income can be achieved.
Unlike the traditional game where players have the task of collecting the rent, rent is automatically gathered with rental incomes ranging between $50,000 for a residential property to $100 million for a SkyScraper.
It is not clear whether Monopoly and Google have formed an alliance to produce this game, however TechCrunch suggests that since the official blog is running through blogger and the social element through Google Friend Connect, this is more than likely the case.
Chance cards within Monopoly City Streets provide an interesting spin to the game, allowing user to build prisons, sewers and rubbish dumps on their competitor's streets. Chance cards also provide opportunities to bulldoze competitor's properties, so it is likely the online game will be even more heated than the traditional board game.
Monopoly City Streets launches tomorrow and will run for four months.
