Inktomi - Search Engine Results Provider

Inktomi

Founded in 1996, Inktomi is based in Foster City, California, with offices in North America, Europe and Asia.

Inktomi's scalable network infrastructure software products are used to publish, distribute, manage and retrieve corporate information across global networks. Their products include network caching, content distribution, media publishing and broadcasting, and enterprise and Web search technologies.

In terms of search partners, Inktomi has long provided the search results (mainly fallthrough) for some of the web's top properties, including MSN, Freeserve, Netscape & AOL.

Perhaps Inktomi's most famous partnership - that with Yahoo! was terminated in July 2000 when Yahoo! jumped ship and selected the then newcomer, Google for provision of fallthrough results

UPDATE
In December 2002, in a surprising turn of events, Yahoo! announced that it would acquire Inktomi, all going well, by March 2003. It is believed that this may mark the end of Yahoo!'s long-standing partnership with Google, although Yahoo! deny this.

Inktomi's crawler-based technology is likely to be key in both helping Yahoo! attract searchers and may help the company earn more from its search results pages.

March 2003
The Deal is Done!
March 19, 2003 Yahoo! announced the completion of its acquisition of Inktomi.
"Bringing together a powerful combination of Yahoo!'s global audience and unmatched breadth and depth of services with Inktomi's leading search technology, will allow us to create one of the most relevant, comprehensive and highest quality search offerings on the Web for both our affiliate partners and Yahoo!," said Terry Semel, Yahoo! chairman and CEO.
