The innovative and quirky French search engine Kartoo has launched a re-designed search interface.Andrew Girdwood
Kartoo provides two basic search interfaces. The first, the most text based, shows a summary thumbnail of the matching web page followed by a length snippet of text from the site.

The second is a relationship map of the results, connecting websites via keywords. In the example below we can see how the search [bigmouthmedia flickr] connects the two sites bigmouthmedia.com and flickr.com via photos and twitter. You can compare this to a Google search for the same phrase.

Other new features introduced to Kartoo in this evolution include support for French, English and Dutch language searches, as well as metasearch functionality.
Kartoo also allows users to decorate the search engine's side bar with a games panel, news results, images, topics (or keyword clusters), sponsored lists, top sites or a trend analysis graph on for the search.
Kartoo was founded in 2001 by Laurent and Nicholas Baleydier and this makes it one of the oldest and most successful independent search engines in the world.
