Microsoft wins the battle of the brands

At bigmouthmedia, we know the importance of branding - and it looks as though software megalith Microsoft is more than aware of the benefits of creating a strong presence. The software giant has reclaimed the top spot in Superbrands UK's annual survey.

The achievement will offer a particularly sweet taste of victory to the global firm as the move means last year's winner, Google, is shunted from the number one position - something Microsoft is undoubtedly always pleased to see. What's more, as Google stole last year's winning spot from Microsoft in the first place, the events must seem deliciously full circle to the victor.

Now in its twelfth year, the annual top 500 consumer brands survey judges companies based on quality, reliability and distinction. According to Stephen Cheliotis, the chief executive of the Centre for Brand Analysis - the company that executed the survey on behalf of Superbrands UK -, the businesses that made the list all have reason to be proud.

The BBC reports that Mr Cheliotis said: "Actually making the top 500 itself is an achievement - the competition amongst brands for consumer attention and share of wallet is intense and growing fiercer."

Of course, there's no beating first place and Microsoft must be chuffed that it thrashed around 1,400 competing brands to the top spot - especially search darling Google, which dropped not one but two places into third position behind Rolex.

Fellow software goliath Apple also clambered into the top ten this year, hitting ninth place - possibly pushed up the ranks thanks to its overwhelmingly successful iPhone campaigns and careful branding prowess.

As the survey defines the title of a 'Superbrand' being one that has "the finest reputation in its field", according to the BBC, it looks like Google might have some work on its hands to overcome this public defeat - so perhaps we'll see some interesting campaigns prior to next year's review.
