Many advertisers and users were concerned that the search engine had gone belly-up but it was apparently down to a BT problem

"We would like to apologise for the recent interruption in service.
This was due to the damage of a major fibre optic cable within the BT Network
near the UK backbone, which serviced a number of their corporate customers.
We hope this did not cause you any inconvenience"
