Users of the iPhone device access news and information via their phones more than other mobile phone owners, according to new research.Figures produced by measurement firm M:Metrics suggest that 84.8 per cent of iPhone users accessed news and information on their phones in January, compared to just 13.1 per cent of the overall mobile phone market and 58.2 per cent of total smartphone owners.
It was also found that 58.6 per cent of the iPhone users surveyed had visited a search engine on their mobile device, compared to 6.1 per cent of mobile users in general and 37 per cent of smartphone owners.
Meanwhile, almost one in three people who own an iPhone (30.9 per cent) reported having watched mobile TV or video clips on their device. This is more than double the percentage of people who used such functions on smartphone devices in general.
Commenting on the findings, Mark Donovan, senior analyst for M:Metrics, stated: "The iPhone has certainly delivered on its hype.
"Beyond a doubt, this device is compelling consumers to interact with the mobile web, delivering off-the-charts usage from everything from text messaging to mobile video."
He added: "While the demographics of iPhone users are very similar to all smartphone owners, the iPhone is outpacing other smartphones in driving mobile content consumption by a significant margin."
First announced by Apple in January 2007, the iPhone was eventually released six months later in the US and reached the UK, Germany and France in November.
