30 May 2007Mobile calendar launch for Google
Google has announced the launch of a mobile phone version of its popular calendar service, available to all web-enabled handsets.
Users can get hold of the tool for free, but it can only be accessed on mobiles with internet connectivity options.
Since launching the service back in April, Google has planned to bring the service onto mobile phones.
Google software engineer Devesh Parekh wrote on a company blog: "We realise that more people in the world have mobile phones than have computers, and people take their phones with them everywhere."
The Google Calendar will be accessible via the normal Calendar website, where users can view a list of events upcoming in their schedules.
"Since one of our main goals on the calendar team is to make planning events and maintaining schedules as easy as possible, starting today you can access your Google Calendar account from your cell phone," Parekh added.
Meanwhile, Google is being probed by an independent European Union panel over concerns raised about its data retention.
The 28-person panel wants to investigate Google's data storage practices and whether or not they abide by European privacy laws.
"We believe it's an important part of our commitment to respect user privacy while balancing a number of important factors, such as maintaining security and preventing fraud and abuse," said Peter Fleischer, Google's global privacy counsel.
"We are committed to engaging in a constructive dialogue with privacy stakeholders, including the privacy advisory group, on how to improve privacy practices for the benefit of Google users and for everyone on the internet."
