The mobile web is proving successful in Japan, according to figures released by digital research firm comScore.Statistics produced by the company suggest that, in June, 53.6 million people in the country used a mobile device to access the internet.
This nearly equalled the figure of 53.7 million users who browsed the web either from home or from a work computer.
The study was based on results compiled following a survey of 3,100 people aged 15 and over.
Checking emails was found to be the most common mobile web activity among Japanese users, with 75 per cent of the mobile internet browsers polled engaging in the activity.
Additionally, accessing news and information was found to be popular, with just over half of users checking such things on their mobile device. Other favoured activities included playing games and reading blogs.
Commenting on the results Maru Sato, managing director of comScore Japan, said: "Mobile Web is a significant opportunity. Advertisers can now reach 53 million consumers online.
"The mobile audience is especially important to marketers trying to reach younger audiences."
However, despite the success of the mobile web in Japan, the actual time users spent browsing the web on their phones was still much lower than that spent on desktops.
Internet usage on phones averaged at 8.1 hours a month, while average desktop usage stood at 18.9 hours.
