MSN experiments with RSS search results

Microsoft, who will be ramping up their own search engine product testing, has been found testing RSS search results. The discovery was made by bloggers and Microsoft has said they will keep the alpha stage search engine experiment live as long as no one abuses it.

Abuse of a search engine which provides results in an RSS format is made easier by the very nature of RSS. RSS - really simple syndication - provides results (news headlines, press releases, latest products, recent searches, etc) in an easy to read computer format. Web users can use software to subscribe to the RSS and receive alerts when it changes or other web pages can incorporate the RSS data. Microsoft do not want to see their RSS listings being used to re-create their beta search engine.

Samples of the Microsoft search engine RSS feeds can be seen at:

http://beta.search.msn.com / results.aspx?q=tsunami+relief&format=rss
and
http://beta.search.msn.com / news / results.aspx?q=tsunami+relief&format=rss

The latter RSS search result feed is drawn from the beta news search. By using these feeds to watch for changes in the search or news results Internet users can watch as Tsunami Relief sites come to the fore and as news stories break.

It is perhaps significant that MSN are experimenting with RSS and not Atom. Atom is an alternative format to RSS and although is widely recognised as a more accurate and precise language construct it is more complex.

Google supports Atom. Google Group's produce Atom feeds. Yahoo supports RSS. Yahoo Groups have RSS feeds, Yahoo's MySearch also has RSS features and Yahoo's organic search listings indicate when an RSS feed from a site is available. MSN's use of RSS search engine results could prove to be the deciding vote.
