MTV to launch lyric search service

MTV to launch lyric search service MTV Networks has announced that it is to launch a new web-based lyric search service in November.

The company will offer the service across the sites of its three main brands - MTV, VH1 and CMT - through a partnership with music information database Gracenote, which holds several agreements and deals with a number of publishers.

As well as providing lyrics, the search facility will allow users to view content such as artist details, videos, news and associated trivia, as well as providing links through which users will be able to purchase the music in question.

In addition, mobile users will be able to access a similar search service from next year, while the ability to search for lyrics to older tracks will also be rolled out in 2008. MTV also intends to include lyric content on its television platform.

"By tightly linking lyrics with video and other curated programming, we're doing what no one else can in a way that strengthens the emotional connections so many of us have with our favourite songs," Van Toffler of MTV Networks told Daily Variety.

MTV Networks digital media executive vice president Courtney Holt added: "The search for the lyric is just a path for the user to experience more content."

Last month, MTV Networks announced that it is developing 24 new websites that will contain targeted content in the areas of music, comedy, entertainment and pop culture.
