The sole holder of the CEO title for popular social networking site MySpace, Chris DeWolfe, is stepping down after six years at the helm of the company. Having overseen the website from its humble beginnings back in 2003 to its present form today, DeWolfe has taken part in much of the website's evolution - but it seems he is now ready to give up the role.
In a press release, MySpace revealed that the decision comes as a mutual agreement between DeWolfe and parent company News Corporation's chief digital officer, Jonathan Miller. MySpace president Tom Anderson could also be set to adjust his role within the company to accommodate the changes.
In the press release, Miller said: "Chris and Tom are true pioneers and we greatly value the tremendous job they've done in growing MySpace into what it is today.
"Thanks largely to their vision, MySpace has become a vibrant creative community with 130 million passionate followers worldwide. It is an enormously successful property and we look forward to building on its achievements with a new management structure we'll announce in the near future."
Though stepping down from the role of CEO, DeWolfe will still feature prominently in the workings of MySpace China. He spoke about his time spent at the top: "In a little under six years we've grown MySpace from a small operation with seven people to a very profitable business with over 1,600 employees.
"It's been one of the best experiences of my life."
Though it is as yet unclear as to how Tom Anderson's role will change, it is likely he will not become CEO himself. TechCrunch speculates that former Facebook executive Owen Van Natta, current CEO of Playlist, could be next in line.
In any case, Anderson remains passionate and positive about the future of MySpace, saying: "From the very beginning, our driving passion has been simple - to create and foster a platform where people across the globe can not only meet and interact, but share music, videos, thoughts and ideas.
"I look forward to working with Jon. I love this business, and look forward to its next chapter."
